Leather care

Leather is a natural product that is finished and equipped with certain specific qualities by the tanner. The leather should keep these qualities as long as possible and this is only possible if the leather is properly cared for.
New shoes are prepared by the leather or shoe manufacturer in such a way that the customer does not need to treat or care for the leather before use. Even outdoor shoes need no special treatment before use—on the contrary, excessive rubbing with grease or similar products can negatively influence both the leather and the wearing quality.
Dirty leather should first be brushed or wiped while dry. If the dirt cannot be removed while the leather is dry, one can use a damp cloth or a moistened brush. Soap or solvents must not be used during cleaning of the leather.
After removing the dirt, the leather must slowly dry at room temperature. Wet leather shoes must never be dried on a radiator or exposed to direct radiant heat, otherwise the leather will become hard and lose its flexibility.
Once the leather is cleaned and dried, it can be treated according to the leather type: smooth leather can be rubbed with customary shoe polish; nubuck leather should be roughened with a special brush and afterwards be slightly sprayed with customary silicone spray.
Excessive treatment is not recommended in shoe care. A shoe does not need new surface polish after each use. Too many care products, wax or grease seal the surface and prevent the leather or the foot from breathing.
Shoes need a break from wearing - therefore, one should change his or her shoes every day. Moisture within the shoe is released into the air during the break and the leather returns to its original form. By giving them regular breaks, your shoes will last considerably longer.
